The HP battery that came with my 9000 series laptop lasted less than 12 months (i.e. in less than a year it could only retain a charge of 30% of capacity). This replacement is also a genuine HP item, but I don’t expect I’ll do any better this time around. I’ve had it for just over a month (as of April 2008) and it already reports that it cannot retain a charge beyond 90% of capacity.
This is my first laptop, so for all I know a 12-month life span is normal, but considering the weight that the battery adds to the laptop and the high cost of replacement, I’m feeling cheated. The battery on my husband’s laptop (which is admittedly only 4 or so months old), is smaller, lighter and lasts far longer even though he plays World of Warcraft.
I think HP would do well to work a little harder on increasing the battery life, but I doubt that will happen as they move on to more advanced technology. For the time being, I’m going to do my best to make sure this battery lasts until HP drops the retail price of replacements to something reasonable.
